Make A One-Of-A-Kind Gift For A Loved One Using Concrete

If you want to give someone special a gift that they can enjoy for the rest of their life, consider creating a one-of-a-kind gift for them using concrete. Concrete is a durable material that can be customized when it is wet to create amazing things that are hard and strong when it dries. The guide below walks you through the process for making a one of a kind handprint and footprint cast for someone special to you.

Mix the Concrete

The first thing you need to do is to mix the ready-mix concrete in a bucket. You will not need a lot of concrete to complete the project, but you want to be sure that you have enough so it is better to mix a little more than you think you will need just to be sure that you do not run out. On the packaging of the ready-mix concrete (from an outlet such as R Pepin & Sons Inc), there will be directions that will tell you exactly how much water to mix with the concrete based on the amount of concrete you are using. Mix the concrete and water based on the proportions indicated on the packaging.

Pour the Concrete

Next, you need to find a glass or metal baking pan that has sides that are at least two-inches deep. Lay plastic wrap around the entire interior of the pan, making sure that a few inches come over the edges of the pan so you can pull the piece out of the pan by lifting the plastic wrap after it hardens. Use a cup to scoop the concrete out of the bucket and into the pan, if it is too heavy to lift and pour into the pan.

Make the Prints

Have your loved one's child place their hand onto the concrete and then help them press it firmly into place. Be sure to explain to them that they need to keep their fingers still when their hand is being pressed into the concrete so that it doesn't look smeared when it is finished. Repeat the process with their footprint.

The concrete should harden within a few hours. The child can then paint the edges of the concrete to make it even more customized. Having the prints of their child will allow your loved one to look at it when their child is grown and think back to fond memories of when their child was younger. It will be somewhat heavy, so you may have to get a heavy-duty plate display rack to use to display it.
